Prefab Village

Completed in collaboration with Midouhas Architects.

Four lots situated on two adjacent blocks were acquired by a local developer after the existing properties had been damaged beyond repair by record floodwaters during Hurricane Sandy. Tasked with designing and building four speculative houses under an extremely tight schedule and an even tighter budget, prefabricated, modular construction proved a viable alternative to traditional stick building.

The site is situated along the busy Long Beach Boulevard, the primary thoroughfare running the length of Long Beach Island. The Barnegat Bay sits west across the boulevard, just behind a marina. Five lots to the east lies the Atlantic Ocean.

Each house is comprised of nine prefabricated modules; the maximum size of each module constrained by the carrying capacity of an over-sized truck bed. A sense of variation between each of the four units is achieved in rotating and mirroring each unit, responding to slight differences across each site. Primary bedrooms and the main living areas are elevated to the uppermost floor to take advantage of water views. Vaulted ceilings and large triangular windows flood the main living area with natural light and frame views of the sky. Additional sleeping quarters and a secondary living space are connected to a covered porch on the lower level. Eastern White Cedar vertical tongue and groove exterior siding, painted cement board and aluminium standing seam roofs are purposed to manage the salt air and harsh coastal weather.
